In 1960, he got his first new dealer’s franchise for Ducati/Norton, and took on the name Rice Cycle. For years he stayed active in the local events, racing “Clyde” the now infamous 1960 Ducati Diana Scrambler that seems to go faster every year as Don still tells his stories. That same year, he took on the Velocette Motorcycle and Greaves brands. He added Bultaco in 1961. Triumph came aboard in 1965 and “You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda” became a mainstay in Rapid City. 1967 brought on the Suzuki franchise. Throughout the years Suzuki, Toyota and Honda Automobile lines were added to the fleet in Rice Cycle & Motor Co. If there ever was a story of perseverance, Don and Phyllis’ story could be it. The dealership that emerged from a garage to the pinnacle of success in the glory days of the 1970s was toppled with the tragic flood of 1972, that wiped out not only the dealership but the entire city of which it depended. The losses were great, not just in property and monetary value, but the loss of many lives. This story isn’t just one of great business, it’s a story of the whole city surviving, then thriving after such a tragedy. Flashing forward to today, after multiple moves of location to allow for more product lines that were taking up more floor space, we landed at our 58,000 sq. ft. store on East Mall Drive. The mission that Don instilled in all of us is, work hard, play fair, and keep the customer in mind. The reason that we are still in business after all these years is our commitment to our customers. As it was then, and is now, quality and selection with the best service are what drive our dealerships.
